Fried Onion Rings

cool runnings

Servings: 4 | Preparation time: 10 minutes | Cooking time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion
  • ½ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ tsp. British Class baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying

Directions
1. Peel the onion and cut it into rings about ¼ inch thick. Separate the rings and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Add the beaten egg and milk. Mix until smooth and well combined.

3. Pour enough vegetable oil into a deep, heavy bottomed pan to reach about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).

4. Dip each onion ring into the batter, turning to coat completely. Let any excess batter drip back into the bowl.

5. Carefully place the battered rings into the hot oil, working in batches so you don't overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp.

6. Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil.

7. Serve hot and enjoy while the onion rings are crisp.
